Charlie ImesCharlie Imes House Concert

At Club Gerz

5:30pm – 10:00pm

Friday, September 12, 2014

4701 67th St

Urbandale, IA

We are pleased to welcome another award winning San Diego Trop Rocker back to Club Gerz. Our good friend Charlie Imes even has some Iowa ties. He will be performing at Club Gerz (our back yard) on Friday September 12th. Doors will open at 5:30 and music will start around 6:30. The cost will be a donation to Charlie (we suggest $15-$20 per person) with all proceeds going directly to him. Please bring a lawn chair and your beverage(s) of choice. Feel free to bring a munchie or dessert to share if you desire. If the weather chooses not to cooperate the concert will be moved to the Club Gerz Annex (our garage).

Blending elements of pop, jazz, folk, rock and a host of other musical styles (a little bossa nova here, some ragtime there), San Diego singer-songwriter Charlie Imes’s music is self-described as laid-back, jazzy, beach folk rock – sort of like James Taylor took a band of Steely Dan-worthy soloists down to Jimmy Buffett’s studio in Key West and having Michael Franks produce their album. The result is music as comfortable as your favorite T-shirt and shorts. We want to welcome you all to our home to share in the enjoyment of Charlie’s music. We hope you can join us. Please feel free to share this with anyone else who might be interested. All are welcome. You can contact us at info@clubgerz.com with any questions. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.

Charlie Imes, singer-songwriter

The youngest of six, Charlie grew up in the South Bay of Los Angeles, but has called San Diego home since 1984. He’s been writing and performing his songs for almost 30 years, but didn’t release an album until 2008. The obvious question is, “Why?”

“Well, honestly,” he says, “it was several things. I owned a business that demanded all of my time, attention, and resources for a couple of decades. Deep down, I always wanted to record an album, but never seemed to have enough money or time… all of the usual trappings that go with holding down a ‘real’ job.”

With the dawning of a new century came a new perspective on life, and Charlie decided it was time to abandon the mentality of working just to survive, and instead, pursue a life doing what he really loved: writing and playing music.

In the summer of 2007, Charlie went into Miracle Studios in San Diego and began work on his first CD, On An Island, which he co-produced with SDMA-winning artist and producer, Jeff Berkley (Berkley Hart). The result was released in May 2008, and garnered a nomination for Best Americana or Country Album at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards. Mastered by multiple Grammy Award-winner Gavin Lurssen (“Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack; “Raising Sand” by Robert Plant & Alison Krause), On An Island, captures life in the coastal towns of Southern California, and conjures up the carefree spirit of long, lazy summer days spent at the beach.

Since then Charlie” has steadily built his following in Southern California and across the country. Primarily a solo artist, he has performed at house concerts, bars & clubs in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and had cultivated lasting friendships and fan bases wherever he goes. Whether large venues or small, his easy-going manner and quick wit give his shows an intimacy that feels like he’s playing for friends around a campfire or out on the deck.

Charlie has also assembled an impressive backing band of all-star musicians affectionately known as The Hodad Surf Club. The name is derived from the Frankie & Annette movies of the 1960s, where a hodad was someone who hung out at the beach with the surfers, but didn’t surf. It seemed an apt metaphor because none of the band members who play his beachy, feel-good music so well, live at the beach. Charlie Imes and the Hodad Surf Club can be found performing at clubs and beaches around San Diego and Los Angeles counties, and are exploring opportunities to bring the band to other cities as well.

In addition to playing music, Charlie has also made a name for himself as the producer and promoter of the Oasis House Concerts, an intimate music venue in San Diego that has built an impressive reputation for presenting singer/songwriters and musical artists of the highest caliber. OHC alumni include Steve Poltz, Michelle Shocked, Peter Case, A.J. Croce, Jack Tempchin, Laurence Juber, Maia Sharp, Keith Sykes, Candye Kane, Eric Taylor, Berkley Hart, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, Chris Trapper and many more. The Oasis is currently in hiatus due to a lost lease, but plans are in the works to reopen at a new venue, even bigger and better than before.

“My songs are about many different things and borrow from many different styles, but there’s an unmistakable lighthearted vibe that runs through my music. I’m not discovering the great lost chord here. I just like to play music that lifts your mood and makes you feel good. It’s sunny weather for your ears, and who couldn’t use a little more of that?”

On An Island is available on iTunes, Rhapsody and most on-line music sources. Charlie can be heard regularly on selected internet radio stations. You can find out more about Charlie at his website, www.crimesofmusic.com or find him on Facebook.

About Rob Mehl

“…THE COFFEE COMES FROM KONA, THE SONGS COME FROM THE SEA!” Nominated the last three years for the Trop Rock Music Award as Best Male Vocalist, Album & Song of the Year, winner of the 2011 Song Of The Year award for his “Waiting For Jimmy”. A native of Oceanside, CA, Rob Mehl spent most of his youth bouncing back and forth between Southern California and Hawaii, where he learned how to surf, appreciate classic literature and play music. His father was a radio DJ, so Rob was exposed to a wide variety of musical influences, including Hawaiian storytelling songwriters, jazz artists and pop music. These influences melded together and found their voice in Rob’s mellow, folk-style beach ballads. Like Jack Johnson and Donovan Frankenreiter, Rob found that surfing in warm waters for most of his life has influenced his music and defined his sound… and his love of great literature has informed his lyrics. After 8 albums and countless miles playing his music all over the world, Rob is still bringing his audience a friendly, feel good show he refers to as “splashin’ the passion!”

Rob’s CDs (available on iTunes and at CD Baby) can be heard regularly on selected internet radio stations around the world. He also has a live concert DVD. For more information, you can visit his website at www.robmehl.com, email him at robmehl@cox.net, or find him on Facebook.

Randy’s Bio

RANDY Z is one of the most talented and unique musicians in the acoustic music genre! He has been performing professionally for many years in Pennsylvania, as well as Connecticut, Minnesota, Wisconsin and points on the east coast from Ontario to Florida. Last fall he completed his third successful Midwest tour playing to audiences in Columbus, OH, Chicago, the Twin Cities, Omaha and Denver. Randy has performed in full bands as a bass player, rhythm and lead guitarist on acoustic and electric guitars, as well as lead vocalist. He has also performed in acoustic trios, duos and solo. Randy incorporates various techniques into his guitar performance….he’s not just a strummer! He uses state of the art technology to record live loops and plays lead, slide and harmonica over them.

Randy is once again playing solo after retiring from the nationally acclaimed duo of Tropical Soul where he had the pleasure and great privilege to play and record with members of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band…..and even opening for Jimmy in Key West in 2002.

Check him out at www.randyzmusic.com and at www.reverbnation.com/randyz. The website is geared towards Trop-Rock music fans and Parrot Heads as he has a following within that group and plays for them regularly across the country. Many of the song have a “summery” theme, however, he has a catalogue of over 200 classic rock, pop, traditional blues, classic country, folk and original songs that he can pull from for any occasion. Randy contours every performance to his audience….some folks want to hear originals; but most want songs they are familiar with and know…..he just wants them to be happy!

Floatin’ With Loren

Loren Davidson calls himself an “escape artist.” Having learned that life looks better when viewed through a glass of something tall and cold on a warm beach, Loren creates musical art that inspires and encourages others to escape from whatever is bringing stress into their daily lives and to play a bit more. It’s music with tropical attitude, a virtual vacation to Key West and other points south, warm, and relaxing.

Loren writes from the perspective that no matter where you are, no matter what’s going on, and no matter what day it is, when you adopt a “tropical attitude,” you can always make believe that you’re in a place that relaxes you and that it’s always 5:00, at least in your own mind.

A Loren Davidson concert is like taking a mini-vacation at a moment’s notice. No need to make reservations or go through metal detectors; just walk in, sit down, and be transported to the Paradise in your own mind. It’s like therapy, only cheaper and lots more fun. Loren will help you make lemonade out of your lemons and margaritas out of your limes.

Loren’s fifth album, Of All the Rum Joints, was released on October 8, 2012 to good sales and reviews. Loren’s fourth album, Island Standard Time, was released in 2010 and placed on several “best of” lists in 2010 and 2011.

Loren lives, works, and plays in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has played house concerts and other venues from California to Key West.

So imagine yourself on the water, bobbing up and down, waves lapping at the side of the boat. Kick back, pour yourself an ice cold drink and sail away with Loren Davidson!

Be sure to check out Loren’s web site at www.lorendavidson.com.

Blast off with the Rocket Man!!!

Trop Rock award winner & nominee, Sam Rainwater performs an eclectic blend of “Mexatropaholic” and Trop Rock Music. A “Rocket Scientist” in his day job, Sam is a Trop Rocker in his soul, writing and playing music in the US and Mexico. You may have seen Sam playing or sitting in on ukulele at Trop Rock venues and events across the country. Sam’s musical growth has taken him from being “the Uke Guy” at local Parrot Head events to the Nashville recording of his two CD’s, “Vacation Location” and “Dressing For Life”.

Sam’s charitable work earned him the 2012 Trop Rock Music Association (TRMA) “I Can” Award for community service. Sam writes and plays all of his music with a purpose, donating 100% of his music income to charity and then doubling those donations through a match from his consulting company, SunTronics Inc.! His current charities are Packages from Home and Wounded Warrior (while in the USA) and Castaway Kids (while in Mexico). To date, Sam has donated over $85,000 from his music.

Sam’s first Nashville produced album “Vacation Location” was key in Sam being nominated for the TRMA Horizon Award in 2011. It features 17 original Trop Rock songs. Michael Lopez of the Phoenix New Times says “this album screams Parrot Head, and the music sure as hell didn’t disappoint”.

Sam’s second album “Dressing for Life” continues his musical adventures. Coupled with his first album and charitable work, Sam’s national reputation has grown and earned him invitations to regional events and air play on internet Trop Rock stations.

Sam is on the way to Nashville in September for his third album “Can You Not Hear Me Now”. He will be debuting acoustic versions of many songs from the new album on his summer 2013 tour.

A Little About Scott Kirby

Scott is a talented singer/songwriter touring extensively around the country appearing at festivals, clubs and theaters performing his brand of coastal inspired folk rock sometimes referred to as “beach folk.” One of the most requested artists on Sirius XM Radio Margaritaville, Kirby is quickly expanding his East coast fan base across the US and Canada and now into Europe, as well.

Although comparison to Jimmy Buffett is natural because of Kirby’s coastal life ranging from his grandparents’ roots in Newfoundland, to his years on the coast of New England, to his current home in Key West, his storytelling style of songwriting and often humorous performances are also reminiscent of folks like Harry Chapin, Jerry Jeff Walker and Steve Goodman with a dash of James Taylor thrown in.

Kirby grew up in tiny Penacook, New Hampshire, and discovered his love for music and the water simultaneously around age 10! His mother noticed he and his best friend missing for long periods of time in the afternoon. Discreetly following them down to a forbidden creek off the Merrimack River, she discovered they had commandeered an abandoned wooden rowboat and established a clandestine lifestyle of fishing, swimming and exploration! She made a deal: if the boys hauled the boat home and fixed all the leaks under professional supervision, they could re-launch the vessel and continue their nautical lifestyle, which undoubtedly led to Kirby’s string of sailboat purchases beginning at age 19.

During his early years the Beatles were raging and Scott got his first acoustic guitar at age 12, teaching himself to play by ear and later by pouring over songbooks of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby Stills and Nash, James Taylor and others. He claims that 40 years, 20 guitars and five boats later, things haven’t changed that much. He’s still trying to sneak away sailing and play some music, although performing over 150 shows a year, writing and recording take up a good part of his time these days.

Although Scott played in a number of bands through his teens and mid twenties, he didn’t embark on his solo singer/songwriter career until he was nearly 35. In fact he didn’t own a guitar for a number of years while he was fully involved as a political consultant, managing campaigns and producing all kinds of political TV and radio ads. However in 1988, after eight years of that, he packed his guitar and a few belongings and headed for Key West to get out of the cold and play a little music. Once there he began to writing his own material, having been inspired by Coral Reefer guitarist and friend Peter Mayer and a very inspirational late night conversation with legendary songwriter Shel Silverstein.

Kirby released his first studio CD in 1993, titled “Too Damn Yankee”. He followed that up with “Grand Bar Schemes” in 1996, “Walkin on Thin Ice” in 1999, and “Four Good Dogs” in 2004, all on the Little Flock Music label, a distribution co-op he shares with singer/songwriter Peter Mayer. He released his first live CD, “A Night on the Beach” in the summer of 2007. In September of 2009 he released “Row Me Home” featuring 11 brand new original tunes produced by Russ Kunkel. Now Scott is premiering his newest release “Sol Searching” with ten new songs and an array of stellar musicians. The disc is available now through the scottkirby.com and littleflockmusic.com web sites and digitally on CDBaby.com and iTunes.

Scott will be joined by David Edmisten, an extremely talented acoustic and electric guitarist and vocalist from the foothills of North Carolina. Dave comes from a long line of “Carolina” pickers and adds great texture, spectacular solos and crystal clear vocal harmonies to Kirby’s compositions.

After performing more than 500 shows together over the past four years, these two produce an extraordinary rich and dynamic musical sound and vocal blend, often leaving audiences surprised that only two people are on stage!

You can learn more about Scott and his music at www.scottkirby.com .

Just the Facts, Ma’am. . .

John Friday, the Tropical Balladeer, is a singer/songwriter originally from Maryland, now living in Florida. After a back-breaking (literally) Army career, John settled in the Sunshine State where he pursues his musical dreams every night in the locals pubs and bars.

An eclectic set of interests led John through the gamut of college majors, including biology; education; engineering; mathematics; business (“I’d always made fun of business majors, and suddenly I was one!”); computer science; classics (the most useful part of a classics degree is that you can say “Do you want fries with that?” in Latin!); and finally, one that combined many of John’s interests, History. It took a mere twenty years to complete his baccalaureate, as little things like raising children and going to war kept him busy. John’s love of History is readily evident, as he will discuss historical events at the drop of a fin-topped hat.

John got his first guitar when he was 13, after attempts at learning the piano and the clarinet were less than successful. For years, John was never far from that guitar. He took it backpacking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire; while working on a crabber in Chesapeake Bay; even while skiing in Maine & Colorado. He still has that guitar, although his collection has grown somewhat over the years.

When it came time to “get a grown-up job,” John put away childhood dreams and joined the Army. A series of injuries led to a medical discharge after thirteen years of service. Moving back to the Mid-Atlantic region, John shortly realized that (1) he’d never really grown up and never would, and (2) his childhood dreams of making music were still powerful. Eventually, those dreams led to a southward move. “Dreams…don’t leave childhood without them!”

Hereee’s Mark Mulligan!

Mark grew up far from the ocean in Arizona, but knew his heart belonged to the Sea of Cortez since he was a boy. One of eight children, eventually he found his way South of the border. He’s now in beautiful San Carlos, Sonora Mexico, singing and writing songs, raising his kids in a place he loves, and spending time on the beach instead of in traffic.

Mark is truly a family man. He was blessed with 7 years of marriage to a beautiful woman you hear about in many of his songs, Adela (R.I.P.) She left behind two awesome kids, Marcos (now 10) and Luis (6). Then, Elsa entered into their lives, and one day she became his wife and mother to the two boys. A little over a year ago Jose arrived on the scene and, just a few weeks ago, along came little Marisol, the inspiration for the DIAPERS ARE EXPENSIVE tour!

Mark says, “Watching them play on the beach while I sing… just doesn’t get any better for THIS kid. And I can’t complain about life as an ex-pat in Mexico. Beats the heck out of Nashville. And the tacos rock.”

Mark is also committed to giving back. In 1994 when he was living in Guaymas, Sonora, Mark was inspired to help out some children who lived nearby in abject poverty. From those humble beginnings grew Castaway Kids Mexico, a charity group committed to making a positive difference in the lives of Mexican children in Guaymas and surrounding communities. They fund education scholarships to needy children, host recreational activities for children, provide food, clothing and shelter to families in emergency situations and mentor children from underprivileged families.

Mark is no bar guy. He simply loves to sing for folks who want meaning and heart in their music. Who want to hear about sunshine and beaches and sailboats and cantinas and romance and all the fun stuff that life south of the border inspires one to write about. Singing for people who dance to his tunes one night and the next day join him working with the “Castaway Kids”. He has put out eleven albums, the most recent titled “Greetings From Mulligan’s Island”. Mark has spent the last few years bouncing around Mexico, Belize, Canada and all over the US.

Mark says, “If that sounds like the kind of fellow you’d like to listen to, then I hope to see you at a show! If you happen to pick up a CD or two, muchas gracias. God bless you amigos… see you on the beach.”

So welcome to that beach in Mexico you’ve been dreaming about. Kick back, pour yourself a cold cerveza, and enjoy the music of Mark Mulligan!

Welcome Jeff Pike

As a solo songwriter and performer Jeff Pike creates acoustic/adult contemporary music from the heart. Songs of life. Songs to touch your emotions and inspire thought, all while intimately sharing his story with the listener. His clear, extensive vocal range and style, combined with the studied instrument of choice, be it guitar or piano, express his original music exquisitely. Audiences of his live performances as well as his Independent recordings continuously comment about the uniqueness of how his voice, music and story come together captivating an audience who will take the time to actually “listen.”

Jeff’s latest CD release “50,” is a very special soft rock CD containing demos, forgotten, and unreleased original tracks spanning the past 30 years of Jeff’s career. He has also recently re-released “Live at The Red Light Café,” an all-acoustic CD that many believe to be Jeff’s best recorded work.

Currently, Jeff is appearing with the band “A1A” in the May 2012 Lionsgate motion picture release, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.” You can view the trailer on the home page of www.JeffPikeMusic.com.

In April, he returned home from a very successful two and a half month national house concert tour with singer-songwriter Hugo Duarte. Dubbed “The Frozen Gringos,” the duo unexpectedly attracted a large audience of fans in a short amount of time. Plans are under way to produce their first CD and another tour slated for late fall of 2012.

Jeff has been performing as a solo artist for almost 30 years and has a very extensive song list. He still performs “cover” gigs regularly and is available for hire. His vast song repertoire is available here online at www.JeffPikeMusic.com.

Jeff has performed, recorded and shared the stage with artist’s such as Jimmy Buffett, The Zac Brown Band, Mac McAnally, The Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, Rick Springfield, Travis Tritt, Ru-Paul, Francene Reed, Bachman Turner Overdrive, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Toy Caldwell, The Marshall Tucker Band, David Allan Coe, Bertie Higgins, Ricky Medlock and Blackfoot, Keith Burns, Kansas, Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits, Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, Johnny Rivers, Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs, Clarence Carter, The Tams, The Swinging Medallions, Nadirah Shakoor, Peter Mayer, Jim Mayer, Roger Guth, Greg “Fingers” Taylor, Amy Lee, Michael Utely, Robert Greenidge and more.

Who is Hugo Duarte?

Hugo is a singer/songwriter/recording artist from North Carolina, who travels extensively around the country performing his original music as well as his interpretations of songs by other well-known artists. He’s a great storyteller, a first-class songwriter, a talented musician, and a true Southern gentleman. His songs will make you laugh, make you cry, and if you really listen, they’ll make you think about what it means to be alive.

Duarte blends of a bit of Country, a pinch of Bluegrass, a handful of Southern rock, a cup or two of Blues, a dash of Island music, occasionally sprinkled with some American history, or tales of the sea, to form an eclectic style that doesn’t fit into the traditional definitions of the Rock and Roll world, the Tropic/Island sound, Blues, Country or any other particular genre. He has shared the stage with the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Steve Winwood, Steve Cropper, Sam Clayton, Russ Kunkel, Billy Dean, Fingers Taylor, Michael Utley, Robert Greenidge, and Larry Michael Lee.

Hugo currently lives at his own Hillbilly Beach in Wilmington, NC. To learn more about Hugo, check out his websites www.hugoduarte.com and www.hillbillybeach.com.

Charlie Imes, singer-songwriter

Charlie Imes grew up the youngest of six in the South Bay of Los Angeles, but has made San Diego his home since 1984. Having spent many evenings in his youth wearing headphones and listening to the record collections of his WW II-generation parents and older siblings, Imes eventually found his way to Hollywood and the Sunset Strip to enjoy the vibrant music scene of L.A. in the 70′s and 80′s. Imes freely embraces this wide variety of influences: “I’m not discovering the great lost chord here. Everyone is shaped by their musical idols. I just wanted to make an interesting, fun record to listen to while you’re relaxing with a cool beverage on a warm day. It’s sunny weather for your ears, and who couldn’t use a little more than that?”

Imes has been writing and performing his songs for almost 30 years, but has never released an album until recently. The obvious question is “why?” “I honestly didn’t give it that much thought,” he says. “I suppose that deep down I always wanted to record my album, but I got busy, never seemed to have the money or time… all of the usual trappings that go with paying the bills and holding a ‘real’ job.” Imes played guitar and sang in a few bands doing parties and bar gigs, but he was more likely to be found playing with friends around campfires or while barbequing out on the deck. Reflecting on his “amateur” days, Imes notes, “I guess the business part of the music business never had much appeal for me. Music is something pure and fun, and it always seemed like the business aspect is what artists complain about. I preferred to play for friends or myself, just for the love of playing and writing. I was focused on making my small business work in the ‘real world’ for years. But I eventually figured out that I wasn’t having much fun with a non-music business either, so I figured that if I’m going to have to deal with that b.s., I might as well enjoy what’s driving it.” Imes cracks his broad grin and adds, “Helluva time to make a career switch, eh?”

A San Diego Music Award nominee in 2009 for Best Americana or Country Album, “On An Island” captures a life spent in the beach towns of Southern California. Blending elements of pop, jazz, folk, rock and a host of other musical styles (a little bossa nova here, some ragtime there), San Diego singer-songwriter Charlie Imes releases his first CD and it’s as comfortable as your favorite T-shirt and shorts. Co-produced by Imes and San Diego Music Award-winning artist and producer, Jeff Berkley (Berkley Hart, Citizen Band), and mastered by multiple Grammy Award-winner Gavin Lurssen (“Oh Brother Where Art Thou” Soundtrack; Robert Plant & Allison Krause), the warm feel of this album is perfect to conjure images of long summer days at the beach – sort of like a cross between Jimmy Buffett and Donovan Frankentreiter, with a jazzy flavor reminiscent of Michael Franks thrown in for extra spice. Invite over a few friends, fire up the ‘que and enjoy this lighthearted celebration of those carefree days of summer!

About Rob Mehl

“…THE COFFEE COMES FROM KONA, THE SONGS COME FROM THE SEA!” Nominated the last two years for the Trop Rock Music Award as Best Male Vocalist, Album & Song of the Year, winner of the Song Of The Year award for his “Waiting For Jimmy”, a native of Oceanside, CA, Rob Mehl spent most of his youth bouncing back and forth between Southern California and Hawaii, where he learned how to surf, appreciate classic literature and play music. After 8 albums and countless miles playing his music all over, Rob was honored this past November for the “Song Of The Year” at the 2011 Trop Rock Music Awards in Key West… and now he’s bringing his audience friendly, feel good show.

Rob has recorded 8 cd’s (available on iTunes and at CD Baby) that can be heard regularly on selected internet radio stations around the world. He also has a live concert DVD. For more information, you can visit his website at www.robmehl.com, email him at robmehl@cox.net, or find him on Facebook.

Acoustic beach ballads with a hint of jazz, Rob Mehl plays guitar and ukulele, tells stories between songs, and thinks the audience “splash zone” should reach all the way to the back row!

Here are a couple of samples of Rob’s music, Over You (For Now) from his 2009 release “Out Of the Blue” and Walk On The Beach from his 2005 album “Could You Be More Pacific?” Enjoy!!!
